Jan. 6 hearings: Live coverage and latest updates, June 16 - The Washington Post 1

Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-Miss.), chairman of the House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection, said the panel plans to invite Virginia “Ginni” Thomas, the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, to be interviewed by the panel. The conservative activist was not originally expected to be a focus of public hearings this month. But people involved in the investigation say newly obtained email correspondence between her and White House lawyer John Eastman have revealed that her efforts to overturn the 2020 election were more extensive than previously known.

Meanwhile, a former lawyer for Vice President Mike Pence and a retired federal judge in statements Thursday to the committee both harshly criticized President Donald Trump for trying to pressure Pence to overturn the 2020 presidential election results as Congress counted electoral college votes on that violent day.

Both are scheduled to testify live when the committee holds its third high-profile hearing of the month starting at 1 p.m. Eastern time. Lawyer Greg Jacob suggested Trump tried to use election law as a “plaything” to advance his interests. Retired conservative jurist J. Michael Luttig said Trump’s repeated false election claims “laid waste to Americans’ confidence in their national elections.”
