The Spectacular Rise and Fall of Subway’s $5 Footlong

1 What goes up must come down? Subway's $5 Footlong

The Rise and Fall of Subway (and the $5 footlong).

This is a fascinating story well worth your time. Read it.

In short, it tells the story of Subway's famous (now infamous) “$5 footlong” promotion, which, when introduced by the corporation during the financial crisis, was a smashing success, sometimes doubling (or more) a store's revenue. The promo catapulted Subway into the #1 spot among fast food eateries.

But in years since, with rising labor costs and a jacked up franchise fee, the promotion became a true loss leader, causing many franchisees to fold or stop honoring the promotion.

The $5 footlong was created by a Subway franchisee back in the 1980s. He refuses to participate in the promo now.

2 New York legalizes recreational marijuana

That's it. It's just a matter of time before the entire nation is high on the Devil's lettuce.

Governor Cuomo's announcement. It is interesting (and nice) that folks in prison for marijuana crimes will be released, as what they did may no longer be illegal.

3 COVID-19 vaccines 80 percent effective after first dose!

This is good news.

Both Pfizer and Moderna report:

(Reuters) – COVID-19 vaccines developed by Pfizer Inc with BioNTech SE and Moderna Inc reduced risk of infection by 80% two weeks or more after the first of two shots, according to data from a real-world U.S. study released on Monday.

They also report that both vaccines are over 90 percent effective two weeks after the second shot.

My question: Can I take the first shot of both and become The Incredible Spider-Hulk-Iron-Man?

4 Another Trump exposed (again) as a grifter

I'm shocked, SHOCKED I tell ya! NEVER would I have expected THIS:

A Government Accountability Office report found that Ivanka Trump’s women’s empowerment initiative did not adequately track funds and couldn’t even determine what was a woman-owned business.

The Trumps took the GOP grift machine to a whole other level. Just wait until the graphic grifting details come out about Don Jr. and Eric!

And don't forget (never forget!) Tiffany.

Hoo boy!

More here, too.

5 Orange County latest city to suffer mass murder by gun

Four people — including one child — were killed in a mass shooting at an Orange, California, business complex on Wednesday. A woman identified as the fifth victim was hospitalized.

Need I say more?

You know I would. Gun violence is real, y'all. It's time to have an adult conversation about it, its root cause(s), and how to go about reducing it.

Congress won't do jack about it. It's up to US.

6 US Rep (R-FL of course) Matt Gaetz is caught up in a sex trafficking sting

Now, let me first say, I have no idea what's going on. I don't know if Gaetz is a crook or a perv or just another shitbag Republican politician from Florida (that's alone enough for derision).

I can say this: It makes you wonder why he was the only no vote on a bill that was designed to combat human trafficking.

U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz’s vote against a human trafficking bill back in 2017 is popping up on social media following a New York Times report that federal authorities are investigating whether Gaetz violated human trafficking laws.

It will be interesting to watch this play out. On the one hand, Gaetz, a fervent Trump supporter, has been investigated for months (by Trump's DOJ no less) for having sex with a minor, among other things.

On the other hand, Gaetz contends that he and his family have been extorted by ex-FBI or ex-DOJ officials (can't tell who, the story seems to keep changing) to make this case disappear.

It could be that both stories are true.
