Senate Democrats got a gift (Giving Budget Reconciliation the Byrd)
Now, let's see what they do with it.
The Senate has some arcane and antiquated rules that defy democracy, like the filibuster. Even goofier is their rule that bypasses the filibuster when it comes to the budget.
It's called budget reconciliation, or just simple reconciliation (because it doesn't exist without the budget part).
Even weirder is the Byrd Rule.
But I digress. Up until yesterday, Congress got one reconciliation per fiscal year. However, yesterday the Senate Parliamentarian ruled that they (somehow) get two more through 2022. This is in addition to the two they get this year (one for this year and one for last year because the budget wasn't passed).
(This all seems so silly and superfluous. But it's the only way anything will get passed with a 50-50 tie in the Senate. Remember, the filibuster requires 60 votes to pass anything but a budget reconciliation bill).
Man, I'm tired. That was way too much work 🙂
Let's just see what the Senate Democrats craft up for this. I hope it's good, like green energy, student debt cancelation, or shipping off Matt Gaetz to Uranis.
Six dead in Texas in apparent murder-suicide after brothers made pact
In a bizarre suicide pact, two brothers not only agreed to kill themselves but also their family, including their parents, a grandparent, and their sister.
I have no words.
COVID-19 has killed 3 million people worldwide
But wait, there's more (literally). Infections are on the rise–again.
Worldwide COVID-19 deaths are rising once again, especially in Brazil and India. Health officials blame more infectious variants that were first detected in the United Kingdom and South Africa, along with public fatigue with lockdowns and other restrictions.Reuters
This may be it: Are we just too stupid to save ourselves?
Yes. Yes is the answer. Read the next story.
“Michigan becomes newest COVID-19 epicenter”
That's the headline. Here's the story:
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the latest spike in COVID-19 cases nationwide is driven by younger Americans. One theory: A possible link to school reopenings and after-school sports.
“We are learning that many outbreaks in young people are related to youth sports and extracurricular activities. According to CDC guidance, these activities should be limited,” said Dr. Rochelle Walensky, the director of the CDC.
Sending kids back to school and opening up after-school sports seems like a swimmingly great idea.
/snark (but only for a minute–try to keep up)
I promise, this is the last COVID story today.
“While vaccination is important, it is obviously a critical part of our long-term game plan, we’re not going to have enough vaccine, at the way we’re going, into the arms of enough Americans over the course of the next six to 10 weeks, with this surge, that we’re going to stop it,” Osterholm, the director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, told CNN’s Erin Burnett.
“It’s just simply not going to happen,” he added.
Osterholm noted that some states, even where vaccination uptake has been high, are now experiencing rising daily new infections.Huffpost
What wasn't mentioned above is that testing for COVID infections has gone down. Yet infections are up.
Do the fucking math. This IS NOT good.
Major League Baseball moves All-Star game from Atlanta to Denver
Now, I don't really care much about baseball, but it is news when any major sports league feels compelled to move its marquee event to another location because the former location enacted a law that is clearly about voter suppression.
That they moved the game from 51-percent Black Atlanta to 76-percent white Denver is kind of… stunning.
That it's Coors Field, who sells Coors beer, is even stunningier.
That beer is absolute crap. To say it's watered down would be a gross understatement. In fact, I'm sure the water tastes better than the beer.
